This card earns Amex Membership Rewards points, which you can use two ways for travel:
Transfer your points into real miles with frequent flier programs, including Delta SkyMiles.
The points you transfer from Amex to Delta turn into real SkyMiles, so you can add to the miles you already have and get to your next award faster. You can also transfer to AeroMexico, Air Canada, Alitalia, All Nippon, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, El Al, Air France / KLM, Frontier, Hawaiian, Iberia, JetBlue, Singapore, Virgin Atlantic, and Virgin America. Here's an illustration of how it works.
Transferring to Delta miles is one of the most popular options, but savvy flyers like using Membership Rewards points to take advantage of deals with Singapore KrisFlyer (for Business and First Class awards) and ANA (for some of the cheapest options to Asia).
Use your points to book travel on the American Express website.
This lets you avoid the rules of frequent flier programs. Every 10,000 points is worth $100 in flights, hotels, car rentals, or cruises, and you can book just about any flight or hotel this way. You can also pay with part points, and part cash, so you don't need enough points to cover the whole ticket.
Membership Rewards points are best saved for topping off Delta SkyMiles balances you already have or saving for premium international flights using mileage transfer partners like Aeroplan, Air France, or ANA. Beware though that most award flights flown by non-US based partners incur fuel surcharges of hundreds of dollars. You can avoid these by transfering to Delta miles or using Air Canada miles to redeem on United among other options.
For domestic flights that aren't on Delta, British Airways charges as little as 15,000 points roundtrip for short nonstop flights, and American and Alaska are partners of British Airways. The catch is you need to live in a city with a lot of American or Alaska Airlines nonstop flights as British Airways charges extra if your trip involves a connecting flight.
You can also use Amex points for United flights via Air Canada Aeroplan, Singapore KrisFlyer, or ANA Mileage Club.

While not always advertised, this card also offers a companion certificate for domestic travel on Delta flights each year you renew your card and pay the annual fee. It's valid on certain fare classes and carries some restrictions like only being valid on some of its lowest L, U, and T economy fares, and subject to limited seats on any given flight, but if you're flexible it can be useful.
There are two ways to use Delta SkyMiles for flights.
Book award flights.
SkyMiles can be used for travel on Delta, Alaska Airlines, and SkyTeam partners including Air France, KLM, Korean Airlines, Aeromexico, Alitalia, China Southern, and Aeroflot. Other partners include Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Australia and Air Tahiti Nui.
The price you pay generally depends on the region you're traveling to, and you can book on Delta.com or by calling Delta (there's no fee for booking over the phone).
Read our guide to using Delta SkyMiles
Pay with miles.
When shopping on Delta.com, you can use miles to cover some or all of the cost of buying a ticket. Just shop for a flight as if you want to pay cash, and when you get to the payment page, you'll see the option to use miles to cover it. Every 5,000 miles gets you $50 off the price of your ticket.
Delta SkyMiles has many levels for award prices, and for Economy Class, the lowest price for many domestic flights tends to be 25,000 miles roundtrip. Some shorter flights can be as low as 15,000 miles roundtrip. Flights to Hawaii can be as low as 45,000 miles roundtrip, and those to Europe can be as low as 60,000 miles, or even lower during award sales.
During the summer, when tickets to Europe are expensive, the 60,000 mile roundtrip Economy Class award can be a good deal, saving you $1,500 or more. Delta has lots of partners to get you around Europe, and even flights from the West Coast can have decent award availability.
Flights in Business Class to Europe and Asia are also a good value. You can find decent availability on Delta and partner flights for 140,000 miles roundtrip to Europe and 160,000 miles roundtrip to many parts of Asia, getting you thousands of dollars in flight value. Even India is just 140,000 miles roundtrip in Business Class.
And all Delta awards can be booked as a one way ticket for half the price, which is a great way to use your miles if you're short on what's needed for a full round-trip, or want to use a different airline for your other flight.

Some shorter flights can be as low as 15,000 miles roundtrip. Flights to Hawaii can be as low as 45,000 miles roundtrip, and those to Europe can be as low as 60,000 miles, or even lower during award sales.
During the summer, when tickets to Europe are expensive, the 60,000 mile roundtrip Economy Class award can be a good deal, with tickets sometimes costing $1,500 or more. Delta has lots of partners to get you around Europe, and even flights from the West Coast can have decent award availability.
Flights in Business Class to Europe and Asia are also a good value. You can find decent availability on Delta fights for 140,000 miles roundtrip to Europe and 160,000 miles roundtrip to many parts of Asia, getting you thousands of dollars in flight value.
And all Delta awards can be booked as a one way ticket for half the price, which is a great way to use your miles if you're short on what's needed for a full round-trip, or want to use a different airline for your other flight.

You can use Starwood points for both hotels and flights with good value.
Starwood points can be used for nights at Westin, Sheraton, W, Le Meridien, St. Regis, Four Points, and Aloft hotels. Starwood offers hotel nights for some of the lowest point prices, making them great for earning via credit card spending.
For flights, you have two options:
Transfer points into real airline miles.
You can transfer your Starwood points into your frequent flier account with over 20 airlines anytime you want. Partner programs that you can transfer to include American AAdvantage, Alaska MileagePlan, and Delta SkyMiles. This lets you add to miles you might have already earned from flying, or take advantage of good deals you can only get if you use real airline miles, especially for first and business class flights.
The transfers can take several days, but savvy travelers like the fact that you get a 5,000 mile bonus for every 20,000 points you transfer.
Use your points to buy tickets
You can use your points to buy flights on the SPG Flights website, which has access to most airlines, though you won't find some like Southwest. The price you pay depends on the price of the flight in cash. For example, a ticket costing between $345 and $410 will cost 30,000 points. Unfortunately you can't pay part in cash and part in points - you need enough points to cover the entire price of the ticket when you book via SPG Flights.
We estimate the value of Starpoints at about 2.5 cents per dollar for hotel nights. For example, you can get a hotel that might go for $250 a night for 6,000 points + $110. For flight rewards, we generally assume you transfer miles to American Airlines and get a 5,000 mile bonus for every 20,000 points you transfer.
Your actual reward savings may vary based on the price in cash you would have paid for a hotel night, and number of points required.

A special perk is that you can designate one airline each year where you get 35% of your points back when you use points to buy a ticket on that airline via American Express Travel.
So if you buy a $1,000 ticket, that will cost 100,000 points, but you will get 35,000 points back. That's like getting 1.5 cents per point in value.
And if you buy a first or business class ticket on the Amex site there are no airline restrictions. You can choose any airline and get the 35% rebate, not just your single designated airline.
