Or, consider other cards for 50,000 more miles or points that transfer into United miles with additional flexibility for your everyday spending.
Earn 60,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.
$1,000 toward travel or transfer to United, Southwest, and more.
That's $750 toward travel when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards® or 1:1 point transfer to leading airline and hotel loyalty programs.
The US Airways Premier World MasterCard from Barclays is offering up to a 10,000 mile bonus when you do a balance transfer within 90 days of opening.
Balance transfers to the US Airways MasterCard have a 0% intro APR for 15 months – that’s good – but there’s a catch…
There is a 3% fee based on the amount you transfer, or $300 for the maximum $10,000 transfer. So, effectively you’re paying 3 cents for every mile you earn with this bonus. Yes, there are some times a US Airways mile can be worth more than 3 cents (for example, if you use 50,000 miles for a $2,500 first class ticket from the West Coast to New York, or 5 cents in value per mile), but unless you know for sure you’re going to use your miles for a ticket like that it’s probably not worth the $300 in fees you’d pay for the 10,000 miles.
But what about all the interest you’ll save with a 0% rate?
Yes, you would save substantially versus having the balance on your existing higher interest card. But there are better balance transfer offers in the market.
Our advice to Barclays – offer a 30,000 mile bonus for the transfer…and then you’ll have a very competitive offer.
But aside from that, if you don’t do a balance transfer it is a good, money saving card. You get 30,000 miles off the bat, with no annual fee the first year. The annual $99 companion certificates can save you a couple hundred dollars or so if you’re flexible with travel on US Airways. And we like US Airways miles…not so much for use on US Airways, but to take advantage of United’s (their partner) industry leading award seat availability.
