If you are planning to purchase an American Airlines domestic ticket, and think you’ll need to check baggage — then know you can get the first baggage fee waived with the right credit card versus the $50 roundtrip fee you’d normally pay for one bag. And you can extend that benefit to up to 4 other people in your reservation. That could save you $250 in baggage fees in one trip.
By carrying a Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage Visa Signature (secure application link).
What are the requirements of the baggage fees waiver?
The credit card now offers a waiver of the first checked bag fee on domestic flights for you and up to 4 others in your reservation. The only catch is, you must wait 7 days after opening an account to book your ticket to be eligible. But once you’ve done that, any further ticket will have the baggage fees waiver as long as you hold the credit card.
There is no need to use the credit card itself to purchase the tickets. The benefit will be tied to your American Airlines frequent flyer number, so as long as that is in your reservation you’ll get the no first baggage fee benefit.
The baggage fee for the first checked bag on American is normally $25 each way for domestic trips. So, if you bring along yourself and 4 others, and each checks baggage, that’s a savings of $250 in round trip baggage fees.
The credit card carries no annual fee the first year, and you can cancel it at any time. The fee after the first year is $95.
