Q&A: Are there holiday blackout dates on United credit card miles?

by on Tue March 6, 2012 • 2 Comments

Q:  If I have a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card credit card and transfer points to United will there be blackout dates for holidays?

A:  We are at the time when holiday travel starts to show up in award inventory. It’s usually made available about 330 days in advance. The good news is there are no explicit blackout dates on using United Mileage Plus miles, though it’s possible the mile prices will only be available at the high levels for the dates you want.

It’s best to look on  first to see what dates are available at the mile price you like, then transfer the miles over. It’s an instant transfer so no need to rush your decision.
If you don’t find mile availability at the ‘low’ levels for the dates you want, you still have the option to use your Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card points to pay for some or all of the ticket. You just search for the flights at (it’s just like using a travel site like Expedia) and pick your flights. They will show the regular price offered as if you were to purchase the flight directly from United. Then, you can apply points toward the cost. Each point you have is worth 1.25 cents toward a ticket.

@Sue – No specific blackouts for spring break, but availability can be hard to come by at good prices.
