Free medical evacuation coverage via The Platinum Card® from American Express

by on Mon October 17, 2011 • 4 Comments

One of the lesser known benefits of The Platinum Card® from American Express is complimentary emergency medical evacuation while you are travelling. This is part of the ‘Premium Global Assist’ set of benefits that come with the card.

The coverage extends to the Cardholder and qualified family members, and can ensure you are

  1. Evacuated back the United States where your own medical insurance kicks in, or
  2. If you are deemed unhealthy enough to fly back, transported to the nearest facility that can care for you.

The determination of whether you are eligible for transport is made by one of American Express’ approved physicians. American Express will pay for the transportation if the physician deems it medically necessary. You can access the service in an emergency by calling 1-800-345-AMEX.

Please note this is not a substitute for travel medical insurance, which can pay the medical bills you incur in out-of-country medical facilities. It simply covers transportation to a medical facility.

The frequent travelers on FlyerTalk discuss the coverage here.

Additionally, and we hope no one reading this has to use it, the Platinum Card will pay to have remains flown back to the United States in the event the Cardholder or a family member passes away while travelling abroad.

I was just diagnosed with a small stroke and have been cleared to,fly out of the U.S. To Mexico i4 days. My husband is a platinum card holder. Am I correct In my understanding that if I get sick ( stroke) while traveling in Mexico, I will have use of a medical plane to return home to my doctors????

Does any one know what’s entailed to get clearance to fly the medical???

    Thanks so much

@Natalie – Just have him call the number on the back of the card to discuss it – Amex will put him in touch with one of the medical representatives to review your situation. Generally if the doctor says you’re okay to fly without assistance, the coverage may not apply. But if the doctors deem it medically necessary then they may authorize it.
