Marriott Hotel + Air packages are one of the best ways to redeem your Marriott Rewards® points. When you redeem points this way, you’ll need at least 200,000 Marriott points, but you’ll get airline miles and a certificate valid for a seven-night stay at a Marriott property.

The number of airline miles you’ll get and the properties where you can use your certificates at depend on which package you redeem.

Here’s everything you need to know about redeeming a Marriott a Hotel + Air Package.

What package options are available?

Each package requires a different number of points to purchase and the hotel category, airline and number of miles all influence the cost of a package.

Note that when you redeem your hotel certificate, you must use all seven nights at the same property for a single stay (though you can always check out early or add additional nights at regular points or cash rates).

What packages are the best deal?

Some of the Hotel + Air packages are a better deal than others, but it depends on which airline you want to have miles with and which hotel property you plan to use your seven-night certificate.

In general, the United MileagePlus® package is the best deal because it offers a 10% bonus on the mileage portion for the same prices. Hotel + Air Packages 1 and 3 are also good deals depending on the type of miles you need. Hotel + Air Packages 2 and 4 are not a very good deal.

As far as determining the hotel category and number of miles to include in your package, things get a little trickier. First, we will need to assume a fixed value for your seven-night hotel certificate.

This will vary based on the category/tier of the hotel and could also vary depending on how you value that hotel stay. (For example, would you redeem points for a seven-night stay at that hotel anyway?)

For our purposes, we will assume that the seven-night hotel stay is worth what a seven-night stay would otherwise cost in points for that hotel category (remember, the 5th night is offered for free). From there, we will be able to determine the approximate rate of conversion from Marriott Rewards points to airline miles.

Since the United MileagePlus® packages offers the highest number of miles, let’s look at that first.

If you stick with our valuation of the seven-night hotel certificate, the lowest cost per United Mile available is 0.91 Marriott points per mile with many different package options, including the 132,000 + Category 1-5 hotel package (if you redeem at a Category 5 hotel). This is an incredible deal, because United miles are pretty easily worth at least two times what a Marriott point is worth. We typically value our United miles at 2 cents per mile or higher and our Marriott points around 0.8 cents per point.

Any of these packages that offer United miles for under two Marriott points per United mile are a pretty good deal. Above two Marriott points per mile could still make sense if you have a specific hotel redemption in mind and want to pad your mileage balance more than you want to have Marriott points.

The math and results are similar if you want to redeem a Hotel + Air package 1 or 3 with any of the participating airlines for those packages. The lowest cost per mile for these packages is 1.00 Marriott points per airline mile. Again, anything under two Marriott points per airline mile is a great redemption, but anything over can still make sense depending on what specific redemptions you have in mind.

Even though one package could offer a lower cost per mile, you’ll want to keep a few things in mind before making your redemption. You can always upgrade to a higher category hotel package.

This could come in handy especially if you don’t know where you want to use your seven-night hotel stay certificate yet because you could redeem for a Category 1-5 package, and upgrade to a higher package at a later time if you find a higher category hotel that better fits your needs. Additionally, you’ll want to make sure that you can use the miles for the eligible airline.

Even though United has the best prices, if you always fly within the U.S., it could make sense to use a Hotel + Air 3 package redemption to get Southwest points instead. Ultimately, this could offer more value in the form of lower mileage costs per ticket when it comes to redeeming your miles. Similarly, airlines like Alaska Airlines offer very high-value rewards to specific regions, but they aren’t the best option for everyone.

How do I redeem for a hotel + air package?

If you’ve decided that you’re ready to redeem your Marriott points for a Hotel + Air Package, you’ll need to call Marriott Rewards® at 1-800-321-7396.

Where should I use my seven-night certificate?

The best property to use your seven-night hotel stay certificate at is a hotel that you need to or would like to stay for a week anyway. If you’re looking for ideas to plan a trip, there are a few properties that really stand out for redemptions of these certificates.

JW Marriott Phu Quoc, Vietnam

The JW Marriott Phu Quoc is truly an amazing property. It has three pools and a pristine, white sandy beach, and is modeled after a mythical university.

There are plenty of “classes” to keep you occupied, like beer yoga, cooking classes and facial scrub making. Considering that the hotel normally costs between $350 and $500 per night for a standard room, you’re going to get great bang for your buck here with a certificate or with points.

There’s a good chance that this hotel is going to go up from a Category 5 at some point, so it might make sense to book this hotel sooner rather than later.

Roomers Design Hotel Baden-Baden, Germany

This hotel normally costs between $200 and $350 per night, offering great value as a Category 5 Marriott property. There’s plenty to do at the hotel and nearby to keep you busy for a week, including hiking, mountain biking and climbing.

Salt Lake City Marriott University Park, Utah

If skiing is your jam but you want to mix things up and stay in Salt Lake City, this hotel is a great option. You’re only about 30 minutes away from various ski resorts, but with many more dining and activity options nearby. This hotel typically costs between $200 and $300 per night during ski season.

Renaissance Wien Vienna, Austria

While this hotel doesn’t have quite a high price tag, it’s still a lovely option. It’s also only a Category 4 property, but still offers pretty good value. Rates are generally between $75 and $150 per night. In the City of Music, it’s easy to find enough to do to spend a week or even longer.
