The new best place to search Cathay, Qatar, Iberia award space

by on Fri May 5, 2017 • 7 Comments

Asia Miles is the mileage program of Cathay Pacific, and it’s just launched a big update to its award search tool that makes finding space on OneWorld partners that you won’t find on the American Airlines site a lot easier. That’s great if you have AAdvantage miles and want to use them on Cathay, Qatar, Iberia, and more.

You can now get a calendar of +/- 3 days for any partner award search, with both the mileage price and surcharge directly visible from the calendar. So you can see a full 7 days at a time in each direction.

Partners visible on the site include:

  • Alaska
  • British Airways
  • Finnair
  • Iberia
  • Qantas
  • Qatar

Once you create an Asia Miles account, you can start your search by logging in here.

It’s a very basic form, and you’ll want to choose Flexible Travel Dates to get the full view.

Here are the results for  Los Angeles to Hong Kong search in Business Class…

The search is lightning fast, making it really easy to check different date and route combinations.

And it handles partner searches with ease.

Here’s award space to Madrid in business class…

Which includes Iberia options.

Here’s Qatar award space to Doha from Philadelphia

And here’s space from Seattle to Hong Kong using a mix of Alaska and Cathay Pacific.

There are some limitations:

  • It won’t show American Airlines award space, so you need to look at your Cathay or Qatar gateway city to see space departing the U.S.
  • Japan Airlines award space also isn’t visible
  • There could be ‘phantom’ space, so always call the program you want to use before you book or transfer to verify space exists
  • It’s limited to one connection per direction, so for example you won’t see results for Seattle to Bangkok, because the only way to get there involves flying from Seattle to a Cathay gateway city like Los Angeles, and then connecting in Hong Kong to Bangkok

If you’re redeeming Asia Miles, which are transferable from both Amex Membership Rewards and Citi ThankYou, this makes things a lot easier, because you can also book  everything you see in search results online, though transfers still aren’t instant and can take a few days.

But this is a great, quick way to eyeball award space if you’re trying to use AAdvantage miles. While you’ll see big surcharges listed on the Asia Miles site for Iberia and Qatar flights, AAdvantage won’t pass all of those along.

It’s a whole lot easier than waiting for the slow British Airways site to load results.

If you don’t want to login, you can use the new Asia Miles search welcome page to check prices in Asia Miles for any route, which is helpful since Asia Miles is a distance based program.

It’s a good way to scope out sweet spots in the Asia Miles program, like 120,000 miles roundtrip from Los Angeles to Hong Kong in Business Class.

I am in South Africa at the moment and plan on getting back to the US the end of January. I am going to use AA miles and want to have a 2-3 day stopover. I have 300k for 4 of us. Wha should I do to avoid huge taxes like at Heathrow. I don’t care where we stop over and I want the cheapest option! Thanks so much for your help!

@Gabriel – Unfortunately AA miles don’t let you do a free stopover anymore. So you’d end up paying for two separate awards. Best way to avoid Heathrow is to check Qatar flights from JNB or CPT to Doha, and a flight from Doha to the U.S.

Trying to search flights to DOH/AUH from US and flexible date doesn’t work, keeps telling me to switch to fixed dates.

Fare search by “Flexible travel dates” is not available for your chosen itinerary.
Press “Continue” to be redirected to the search results from “Fixed travel dates” option.

Playing a bit more with it, it looks like the flexible date option gives up if there is no availability in the seven day period (date specified +/- 3 days)

So when I see award seats available on CX is it safe to assume that AA has access to the same inventory? The reason I ask is since some airlines make more seats available to members of their own program versus partner awards.

@HoKo – It’s pretty close – there are some times it differs from what you see on in terms of # of seats left but it’s a pretty good gauge.
