The United Presidential Plus card, which offers full United Club membership, is no longer open to new applicants, and it has a couple of other benefits not available on any other United branded card that makes keeping it each year worth a second look.

  • Only the Presidential Plus lets you earn Premier Qualifying Dollars via spending on the card. You’ll earn 1,000 Flexible Premier qualifying miles (Flex PQM) for each $5,000 you spend on your Card, which can be combined with the PQM you earn when you fly. The PQMs can be used to earn a maximum of Platinum Premier status.
  • It’s also the only card that gets you a complete waiver of Premier Qualifying Dollar requirements up to Platinum status, with no minimum spending required on the card. With the United Club and Explorer cards, you need to spend $25,000 on the card in a calendar year to get the waiver. United hasn’t updated its website to reflect this is the case for 2017, but phone reps says it hasn’t changed.
  • Avis Presidents Club was a published benefit for cardholders who registered, but ended formally a few years ago.

But if you were enrolled in Presidents Club benefit before it ended, Avis has been grandfathering in the status each year.

And it’s doing it again for 2017. Here’s the email recently sent out confirming the renewal for eligible members:

Presidents Club from Avis gets you ‘automatic’ (but space available) double upgrades on all rentals, up to a Luxury level car. It’s a more useful status level than Hertz Presidents Circle, which doesn’t offer guaranteed upgrades anymore.

It’s not as great a status level as it was several years ago, when upgrades beyond Luxury were more common, but it’s still one of the better car rental status levels available. And there isn’t even a published way to earn the status outright – it’s by invitation only based on your car rental spend, or in this case, your prior Presidential Plus card relationship.
