The hidden route with wide open AAdvantage awards to Europe

by on Thu February 2, 2017 • 2 Comments

Getting to Europe in Business Class using American AAdvantage miles without paying big surcharges is a lot harder than it should be.

American is stingy about releasing awards on its own flights, often only leaving British Airways options that leave you paying $700 – $1,000 in surcharges.

But there’s a route that you won’t find on with lots of space to Europe all year round.

It’s Jet Airways from Toronto to Amsterdam.

Jet, an India based airline, is a partner of American AAdvantage that’s only bookable over the phone by calling 800 882 8880.

And to check space, you can use, which recently added Jet Airways flights to its award search engine (Delta is also a partner with Jet).

Here’s space for 4 people from Toronto to Amsterdam in Business Class this summer…

Jet operates a Boeing 777-300 on the route, with a 6:35pm departure from Toronto.

The planes have full lie flat seats in Business Class in a 1-2-1 configuration that’s great for solo travelers, but not very close for couples traveling together.

When you’re using American AAdvantage miles, the best bet is to find flights on AA to Toronto that connect to the Jet Airways flight. AAdvantage lets you mix carriers on these awards, so if you live in an AA hub with service to Toronto, like Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, or Charlotte, it’s a great way to make your way to Europe with an easy connection.

AAdvantage lets you put awards on hold up to 5 days without deducting miles, and here’s an example with a Chicago to Toronto flight on American connecting to the Jet Airways flight to Amsterdam.

AAdvantage agents have live access to check Jet Airways award space, so it’s easy to check on the phone, but you’ll have to be specific and try to feed the information to them segment by segment.

Best of all, there are no fuel surcharges when you use AAdvantage miles for Jet Airways flights.

You’ll want to scope out award space on for your American Airlines connecting flights before calling to save you some time, and availability is decent if you’re willing to be flexible between riding in Economy or Business on the shorter flight to Toronto.

And if you want to go onward to India, Jet Airways continues on to Delhi and Mumbai from Amsterdam, and you can book that in Business Class for 70,000 miles one way from the U.S.

How many AA miles is the YYZ – AMS (in biz) flight? What if I needed to take a 25k coach flight to get to Toronto – are you saying that would effectively be free?

More specifically, I can see the following flights:

LAX to YYZ on (25k in coach)
YYZ to AMS on (70k in biz)

How many AA miles would it be to book both legs (LAX – YYZ – AMS)?
