50% Membership Rewards to Virgin America bonus = London for 20,000 points

by on Wed February 10, 2016 • No Comment

Amex Membership Rewards is back with a 50% transfer bonus for points sent to your Virgin America Elevate account through March 10, 2016.

Usually transfers to Virgin America cut your points in half, so 200 Membership Rewards points = 100 Virgin America points, which is not a great deal.

But with the bonus, 200 Membership Rewards = 150 Virgin America points which opens up some interesting opportunities.

For Virgin America flights, each Virgin Elevate point is worth about 2 cents, so each Membership Rewards point gets you about 1.5 cents in value when you use transferred points for a Virgin America flight.

That’s okay, but not very interesting.

There are some better opportunities if you take advantage of flights using Virgin America’s partners, like Virgin Atlantic, Hawaiian Airlines, and Singapore Airlines. Virgin America has a tool that will show you partner prices here, but below are some of the redemption options that can stretch your points furthest.

Riding in Upper Class for under 50,000 points roundtrip is a bargain, even with $1,150 in taxes and fees. It’s like buying a cheap coach ticket and upgrading for just 25,000 points each way.

And just over 25,000 miles roundtrip to Hawaii on Hawaiian Airlines is a great deal that almost matches the 25,000 point price you’d pay if you transferred to British Airways and flew Alaska or American Airlines flights from the West Coast.

If you’re thinking of using Amex points to Hawaii from the West Coast, your options to get there for less almost double with the addition of Hawaiian Airlines flights to the mix.

The catch with Virgin America partner awards is you can’t mix them with Virgin America flights. So for example if you live in Los Angeles and want to catch the Singapore Airlines JFK – Frankfurt flight, you can’t add on a Los Angeles – JFK leg on Virgin America without paying for an entirely separate award.

But if you live near a gateway city for Hawaiian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, or Virgin Atlantic, this transfer bonus can be a great deal.
