Earn 80,000 bonus points after spending $2,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.
$1,000 toward travel or transfer to United, Southwest, and more.
That's $750 toward travel when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards® or 1:1 point transfer to leading airline and hotel loyalty programs.
Choice Privileges, the loyalty program of some pretty bland hotels (Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, Sleep Inn, Clarion, and more), just made it easier to earn stays at some truly luxurious hotels.
The price to stay at any hotel in the Preferred Hotels and Resorts program, which includes over 500 luxury hotels around the world, was just reduced by 5,000 points a night, bucking the trend of devaluations we’ve seen this year across the travel space.
So now you can snag a room at Preferred Hotels for 25,000 – 55,000 points a night, while many of the rooms run over $500 a night if you pay in cash.
These are the kinds of hotels that represent understated luxury. They’re not part of big chains, and they’re often in the best locations to relax, instead of the best locations to hold a meeting.
Perfect for an intimate getaway.
There’s a directory here to window shop, but here are some examples…
You can stay at the Cavallo Point Resort, which overlooks the Golden Gate Bridge, just north of San Francisco for 55,000 points a night. That’s for a room that runs about $499 a night.
Or stay at the Montage Resort in Laguna Beach for the same price in points, versus over $600 a night, and often closer to $800. Every room is a suite and has at least some ocean view.
Doesn’t sound like a bargain to you? Consider you can snag 32,000 points quickly via the no annual fee Choice Privileges Visa from Barclays. Just make a purchase, then make a paid stay at any Choice Hotels property (like a $60 a night place you don’t even have to stay at).
The card also earns double points on everything you buy. And you can buy up to 50,000 points a year.
Cash and points also make it easier to get big discounts. Choice hotels has added cash and points booking options for the Preferred Hotels and they’re available at these rates:
For 10,000 points + $337.50 a night you can stay at any of the top tier 55,000 point properties. So that 10,000 points can save you $200 – $300 in hotel rates each night, netting you 2 to 3 cents per point in value, which is a great deal.
Of course that’s only really a deal if you planned to pay those rates. But for a stay at these exclusive properties just over $300 a night can be a very, very good deal, and availability for standard rooms is pretty generous, even when rates are high.
The quirk about the Choice Hotels program is that you can only book as far out as 50 days if you hold their credit card, and 30 days if you don’t. And you have to call to book, though their site lets you see availability ahead of time.
You can also earn more Choice points if you’re an Amtrak Guest Rewards Select (elite) member, which lets you transfer up to 50,000 Amtrak points a year into 150,000 Choice points. Amtrak points triple when you send them to Choice, so you need just over 18,000 Amtrak points for a 55,000 point Choice hotels Preferred property.
These are the best points to save on a truly exclusive weekend getaway. One that makes the St. Regis look gauche.
