Amex Membership Rewards to Iberia transfer bonus = 1:1 Avios again

by on Tue December 1, 2015 • 4 Comments

Earlier this fall, Amex Membership Rewards slashed the conversion rate of points to British Airways and Iberia Avios by 25%, so it’s no longer a straight 1:1 transfer partner.

But for December, there’s a special 25% transfer bonus to Iberia Plus that brings the straight 1:1 transfer option back.

The Iberia award chart is here, and there are a few ways to play this…

Transfer the points to British Airways Avios

This is probably the most useful option.

If your favorite use of Membership Rewards points was transferring to British Airways Avios, and you’re looking to stock up on British Airways Avios before prices change next year, you can transfer points from Iberia to your British Airways account online, as this post from Head for the Points explains.

Get to Spain for 68,000 points roundtrip in Business Class

Iberia’s own flights cost as few as 34,000 points one way from the East Coast (JFK and Boston), which fall in Band 5 of its award chart below.

Iberia flies to New York JFK, Boston, Miami, Chicago, and Los Angeles in the United States, and imposes very reasonable surcharges on its awards, unlike British Airways.

And while availability isn’t wide open, you can find Business Class seats for many dates next summer, especially coming back from Europe.

Fly on American Airlines (with a catch)

Partner awards, like those with American Airlines, are NOT refundable or changeable after you book them with Iberia Plus Avios, which is a big drawback versus British Airways Avios, which let you get your points back if you cancel your flight less the taxes and fees you paid.

You also can’t book one way awards with partners – they need to be roundtrips.

The chart below shows what flights cost with Iberia Avios on all partner trips. The prices and distances are roundtrip.

So basically, flights that are less than 4,000 miles roundtrip (2,000 miles one way) are cheaper than using American AAdvantage. But you’re almost always better off using British Airways Avios under the current British Airways prices.

Once the British Airways prices change next year, flights of 500 miles or less one way (1,000 miles roundtrip) for 12,000 points with Iberia Avios will be cheaper than British Airways prices of 15,000 points roundtrip. That’s a pretty limited set, but if you’re looking to optimize keep it in mind.

What is the best way to use AMEX rewards? I have about 150K sitting there, and wondering whats the best value option? Is this Iberia deal the best it can get?

  2. Iberia

I transferred 51k MRP to Iberia and much to my surprise received two deposits in my Iberia account totaling 63,750 miles.
