United MileagePlus Club Card annual fee hiked to $450

by on Wed June 24, 2015 • No Comment

Earlier this month United raised the price of United Club airport lounge memberships to as much as $550 per year. And it ended the special spouse membership price of $250 per year.

But until now the fee on the United MileagePlus® Club card from Chase, which includes full membership to United Club lounges was $395 per year.

That’s changed.

For new accounts, the application page now lists a $450 annual fee for the card.

And the fee applies to both the personal and business versions of the card.

(The information related to the United MileagePlus® Club card has been collected by and has not been reviewed or provided by the issuer of this card.)

That matches the price of discounted standalone club membership for United’s top tier Premier 1K members, who will pay $450 a year.

And it is in line with history of the United Club credit card having about the same annual fee as the lowest discounted rate for standalone club membership.

For existing accounts, there has been no formal communication yet.

So if you already have a United Club credit card or older United Presidential Plus credit card it’s not clear when (or if) the fee on your existing card will go up. That’s an entirely different process, though we’re not holding out hope the lower fee will remain for long.

There don’t appear to be any changes to the card benefits.

How does it stack up?

It’s still the cheapest way to get full United Club access, so if United Clubs are a must for you there’s not much choice.

As a Premier 1K member you can get a $60 discount on the annual fee of one United branded credit card each year.

And if you only want to visit domestic lounges, buying an Air Canada Maple Leaf lounge membership may be cheaper thanks to the strong dollar.

$450 is the same annual fee as the American Executive AAdvantage credit card and Delta Reserve Card, both of which offer lounge access to their respective clubs.

If you’re lucky, you might still be targeted for an offer with the first year annual fee waived, described here, if you login to your MileagePlus account. The standard offer is for a $100 statement credit.
