Wide open lie flat business award space on United’s cross country flights

by on Thu June 18, 2015 • 2 Comments

Starting October 25th, United Airlines is moving all of its flights from New York’s JFK airport to its hub at Newark-Liberty airport.

These are United’s ‘P.S.’ Premium Service flights to and from Los Angeles and San Francisco that feature international style service with lie flat seats in business class and on demand video monitors at every seat in economy class.

As part of it, all United flights from Newark-Liberty to Los Angeles and San Francisco will be upgraded to feature the P.S. international style service and planes.

What that means is there will be a whole lot more lie flat business class seats flying out of Newark on United.

And sudden changes like this often mean great opportunities to grab award space for cheap.

This is no exception.

Right now there is wide open space to use your United MileagePlus miles for a lie flat business class seat on these new flights at the lowest Saver level price of 25,000 miles one way.

That’s important because before this change it was very hard to book a business class seat with miles at the 25,000 mile level on United’s premium flights from New York to the West Coast.

It’s just about impossible on Delta’s equivalent flights, and very hard on American’s ‘Flagship’ transcontinental flights unless you’re traveling solo.

Here’s how it looks from Newark to San Francisco around the holidays.

Green and blue days have business class seats on the nonstop flights at the Saver level price…

It’s not just really early or really late flights. You can find the space on prime flights like these:

And you’ll also see generous space from Los Angeles…

Most days have space for 4 or more passengers, so you can bring the family along.

There are two reasons you’ll want to get in on this:

  1. You plan to fly between the West Coast and East Coast and want to do it in comfort at an attractive price
  2. You are trying to get from the West Coast to Europe. It’s a lot easier to find business class award space to Europe on flights out of New York than on nonstop flights that start on the West Coast. Now that the West Coast to New York flights are wide open, it’s easier to piece together a business class award that gets you international service all the way through.

United is moving passengers who previously booked its JFK flights over the weekend, so the award space you see now might dry up. Book now if you want a piece of it. You can also use the miles of Star Alliance partner programs like Air Canada Aeroplan (an Amex Membership Rewards partner) or Singapore Kris Flyer (a Citi ThankYou partner) to grab the seats.

But if you’re planning ahead, keep in mind United (and Delta, American, and JetBlue) have some decent cash fares in business class between New York and the West Coast.

On United you can fly roundtrip for $1,200 in its lie flat bed, as long as your trip includes a Saturday night stay and you book 30 days in advance.

I want a non stop lie flat seat from Honolulu to the east coast. My destination is Charlottesville ,. Va . I am willing to fly anywhere on the east coast for a transfer so that I don’t have to fly recliner to the east coast. Where, on the web site , do I find my options?

@donna – Your best bet is to go via Chicago or Washington Dulles, which offer lie flat seats for the HNL to mainland portion of the flight. Just search for HNL – CHS and if those connections are available as awards, you’ll see them.

HNL-DEN, IAH, and EWR also offer lie flat seats.
