Is the Hawaiian Airlines credit card worth an $89 fee? Consider a no annual fee alternative

Pros

Companion travel discounts. You get 50% off a companion ticket booked in the first year you have your card, and every year after you get $100 off a companion ticket.

Free checked bag. This is the only card that gets your first bag checked free on Hawaiian Airlines flights, saving you up to $50 roundtrip. Just be aware the free bag is only for you the primary cardholder, and not any traveling companions.

Good upgrade prices. With Hawaiian Miles you can upgrade for as few as 25,000 miles one way from the cheapest fares, as long as there is ‘Saver’ level First Class space on your flight, which you’ll find if you’re very flexible with your dates.

Cons

Upfront annual fee. There’s an $89 annual fee that’s not waived the first year, so you don’t get a chance to sample the card without paying a fee for the privilege. If you don’t want to pay an annual fee, American Express has a card with no fee that earns points you can transfer directly into your HawaiianMiles account any time.

Partner airline options aren’t good. If you just want to use HawaiianMiles to get to Hawaii, they work well. But if you want the flexibility to use them on partner airlines, you’ll end up paying far too many miles than it’s worth. You’re better off earning miles with a big global airline like United, or points you can transfer into several airline programs like those from the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

I am trying to book tickets using my companion fare we have available to us. I would like to bring my child who is 11. But once I pick 1 adult and 1 child it says it is not allowed with the discount code. Nowhere on the “on time 50% off companion fare” does it say it needs to be 2 adults. Can I book as 2 adults even though one will be a child and will my companion fare be honored??

@Lindsey – If the child will be traveling with you it shouldn’t make a difference what pick you make. Just make sure the birthdate is right when you get to the passenger info.
