Airline Credit Cards

CardFinder

Airline credit cardsAirline credit cards can boost your mile earning quickly, but not all airlines deliver on easy rewards. Some are good for U.S. flights, others better for long international trips, so the best card for you depends on where you want to fly. It's easy to find a better card for airline flights with our tools:

1. Tell us how much you usually spend
2. Choose where you want to fly
3. The CardFinder will rank the best cards for you

We regularly monitor award availability and prices, using that intelligence to rank the right cards for the places you want to go with your miles based on both how fast you can earn and how much you'll need to redeem. If you have your own opinion, you can customize the award value we use so you can find the best cards for your habits.

Note: Annual point and rewards calculations are MileCards.com estimates only and not provided by any credit card issuer. They are for comparison only, and may vary based on your actual spending and travel.

Where can you use your points?

This is one of the most flexible cards available, and is a solid choice for all kinds of flight rewards, especially if you want to try both domestic and international travel. That's because the points it earns can be transferred directly into your accounts with United, Southwest, and more. Even if it doesn't rank highest in total reward value for you in this list, you may find the fact that you can top off your mileage accounts in several programs worth more than we calculate.

Other programs you can transfer points into include British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Korean Airlines, Amtrak, Hyatt, Marriott, and Ritz Carlton. That means you can combine points from this card with miles you've already earned at any time.

You can also use your points toward the cost of buying travel on www.UltimateRewards.com with no blackout or capacity controls. If a ticket is for sale you can buy it, with every 10,000 points worth $125. Savvy travelers find the best value is transferring points to airline miles for rewards, particularly long distance international flights via United MileagePlus.

Estimated Rewards

For domestic flights, the best use of points is generally to transfer to Southwest, where you can you can often find flights for less than 20,000 points.

You can also transfer your points to United, which is a good value for long international flights. You can get a roundtrip to Europe in Economy Class on United or its many partners for 60,000 miles on many days and to Asia for 70,000 - 85,000 miles, even when airfares are $1,200 or more. If you're flexible with dates, Hawaii roundtrips on United are 45,000 miles.

For hotels, we assume you transfer points to Hyatt, the highest value hotel program.

If you choose to redeem travel directly through Ultimate Rewards, every 10,000 points is worth $125 in travel, or $0.0125 each toward any flight or hotel room.

You may get more value out of the card by transfering to other partners. For example, if you transfer to British Airways Avios you can get awards on its partners American Airlines or Alaska Airlines for as little as 9,000 points round-trip. It's a useful option if you live in a city with a lot of American or Alaska non-stop flights.  And if you're heading to Hawaii you can use Avios for non-stop flights from the West Coast on Alaska or American for 25,000 points round trip, versus 45,000 miles or more with most other airline programs.

Where can you use your points?

You can use points on Virgin America flights, which are a very good deal, but we only recommend this card if you live near San Francisco or Los Angeles, the cities with the most Virgin America route options, or plan to fly to them with your points on a Virgin flight.

You can also use points on partners like Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Australia, Hawaiian Airlines, and Emirates Airlines. So these points are also useful for getting to Hawaii via Hawaiian Airlines, the UK, India, and Africa via Virgin Atlantic, and the Middle East and Asia via Emirates. But you'll have to call in to book these partner awards as they are not available online.

Estimated Rewards

Virgin America Elevate® reward points are worth about 2.2 cents each when used for travel on Virgin America. So a $300 ticket costs only about 15,000 points. That's valid for any seat, anytime, a generous proposition.

For partner travel a roundtrip in Economy on Virgin Atlantic from San Francisco to London can be had for 25,000 points + $390 in taxes and fees. A roundtrip in Economy on Hawaiian Airlines from San Franisco to Maui can be had for 26,000 points plus $10 in taxes and fees, which is a very good deal versus the 40,000 points most mileage programs charge.

You also earn an annual bonus based on how much you spend:

$50,000 - $99,000 10.0%   10.0%   20.0%
$100,000 Plus 20.0%   15.0%   30.0%

Estimated Rewards

Your points are worth 1.6 cents each toward American and US Airways airfare when you book via the Citi ThankYou Travel Center - that means a typical $300 ticket costs just over 18,750 points. Points for flights on other airlines are worth 1.33 cents.

Our point earning calculations assume you earn 4 points per dollar when you buy airfare with the card. This is because the card earns you points for both the price of the ticket as well as the number of miles you will fly with the ticket.

For example, a $300 ticket that is 1,000 miles in distance roundtirp will earn you 1,300 points. That works out to just over 4 points for each dollar you spent on the airfare.

If you buy tickets to further destinations you will earn even more points. For example a $1,200 ticket from New York to London that is 7,000 miles roundtrip will earn you 8,200 points.

Where can you use your points?

You can use your points to offset the cost of any travel booking with any airline. Just buy the ticket with your card, then apply your points to remove some or all of the cost from your statement. The best part is the introductory bonus will hit your account right after you hit the $1,000 spending threshold. So if you're about to book a vacation, you can save $400 on it right away. Just pay for the tickets you want, and hit $1,000 in total spending, then you can apply the bonus points you earn to erase the cost of your ticket. You have up to 90 days after your purchase to apply points to offset the cost. And you can use points to pay for just part of the ticket if you'd like, so you don't need to have a big balance of points to start saving money.

The downside is your points are always worth the same amount - about one cent each. So you miss out on some of the big values traditional airline miles provide for first / business class or international travel. But if you are okay with saving a decent amount on basic travel, this is a great no-fuss option that gives good value with little work on your part.

Estimated Rewards

2,000 points are worth $20 toward travel purchases, and you get 10% of your points back for each travel redemption. That gives a net value of 1.1 cents per point.

Where can you use your points?

Earns Virgin Atlantic Flying Club miles. Good for travel on Virgin Atlantic, Virgin America, Virgin Australia, and many partners, including Delta Airlines, though Delta can have very limited availability of awards and you must call on the phone to book partners.

While this card can be a good deal for travel to England, it's not as easy to use for U.S. and other travel unless you want to deal with calling on the phone to book partner flights.

Estimated Rewards

Virgin Atlantic charges 35,000 - 42,500 miles roundtrip for an Economy flight to/from the UK plus a surcharge of about $500 (connections on partner airlines not included). That compares to a typical Economy airfare to the UK of about $1000. Flights in Upper Class incur surcharges of over $1,000 and often cost over 100,000 points. Rates for travel on Virgin America in the U.S. are reasonable with flights as low as 10,000 points roundtrip and few or no fees. You also have access to book on Delta flights. For example domestic flights are 25,000 points roundtrip, but availability of seats is limited. So we can really only recommend this card if you live in a city with good Virgin Atlantic or Virgin America service.

Where can you use your points?

Southwest is a good program for earning domestic travel, with Southwest points worth nearly 1.5 cents each when used for Wanna Get Away fares.

Southwest has very wide availability for flights with points and this card earns a special annual bonus of 6,000 points, which is enough for over $80 toward a Wanna Get Away fare.

The downside of the Southwest program is limited value for flying places Southwest doesn't fly. You can use your points to buy tickets on other airlines for international and Hawaii travel, but it's at a less desirable rate that makes your points worth about 1 cent each in some cases.

Estimated Rewards

Earns Southwest Rapid Rewards points. Use for flights on Southwest and Airtran. Wanna Get Away fares can be purchased with points at the rate of 60 points per dollar of airfare (70 points after March 2014). Also redeem points for Gift Cards, Car Rentals, Cruises, Hotel Stays, and International flights to over 800 Destinations on 50+ global carriers.

  • Every calendar year you make $30,000 in purchases on your British Airways Visa Card, you'll earn a Travel Together Ticket good for two years
  • Smart Chip Technology allows you to use your card for chip based purchases in Europe & Beyond, while still giving you the ability to use your card as you do today at home

Where can you use your points?

You can use Avios to book flights on British Airways and its OneWorld partners, including American Airlines, Iberia, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, LAN, and Japan Airlines. Alaska Airlines is also a partner you can book.

Beware that British Airways charges fuel fees of several hundred dollars for awards on its own Transatlantic flights. So a flight to or through Europe can incur about $500 in fees for Economy Class (plus about 50,000 points) and $1,000 in fees for Business Class (plus about 100,000 points, depending on how far you're going). That tempers the value of your points. For expensive Business Class tickets this can still be a decent deal, but it's something to be aware of. Awards on American Airlines and Alaska Airlines don't carry these fees. Awards on other OneWorld partners like Iberia and Cathay Pacific also have fuel fees, but they are generally lower than those on British Airways flights.

Estimated Rewards

British Airways Avios are actually most useful for trips within the United States. One of the best uses of Avios is non-stop American Airlines and Alaska Airlines flights. Roundtrips start at just 9,000 Avios, and nonstop flights of 2,500 miles (about the longest flight you'll find in the U.S.) are 25,000 miles roundtrip. That compares to a minimum of 25,000 miles for a roundtrip using American Airlines miles for those same flights.

Another good deal is Alaska and American flights to Hawaii that price at just 25,000 miles roundtrip from the West Coast vs 40,000 or more in their own programs. Just note that Avios charges for each flight segment, so trips that have a connecting flight price out higher than non-stop flights. We recommmend this card if you live in a city with lots of nonstop American or Alaska flights (Dallas, Chicago, Seattle, New York, Miami, and soon Phoenix, Charlotte, and Philadelphia), or service from British Airways for getting to Europe.

Your actual reward savings may vary based on how much the ticket or hotel you purchase would have cost in cash.

Where can you use your points?

AAdvantage miles can be used on American and US Airways flights, as well as for flights on its partners, including British Airways, Cathay Pacific, LAN, Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Japan Airlines, and more. Note that you need to call in to access Cathay Pacific, LAN, and Japan Airlines flights.

Flights on British Airways incur fuel surcharges which vary, but are around $500 for Transatlantic flights in Economy and $1,000 in Business or First Class.  These are fees British Airways also charges its own frequent flyers when they book with miles. Other partner flights do not have surcharges of this magnitude.

Estimated Rewards

AAdvantage miles are best saved for flights in Business Class and First Class, which opens up some very good deals.  You can get to most of Asia for about 100,000 miles roundtrip in Business Class on American or its partners Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines with decent availability. Europe is also available for 100,000 miles roundtrip in Business Class, but beware that flights on British Airways incur large fuel surcharges of about $1,000 for Business Class and about $500 for Economy Class. Domestic flights are usually available for around 50,000 miles in First Class, a decent deal versus fares of around $1,000 or more.

There are also some good deals in international Economy Class. You can fly to Europe from Oct 15 - May 15 for just 40,000 miles roundtrip and much of Asia from Oct 1 - April 30 for 50,000 miles in Economy Class on American and its partners. Availability to Hawaii is spotty in Economy Class at 40,000 miles, though First Class seats at 80,000 miles tend to be easier to find, especially if you can take advantage of partners Hawaiian Airlines or Alaska Airlines from the West Coast. Australia is also a great option, with partner Qantas offering many seats for 75,000 miles round trip in Economy, though seats in Business Class are very hard to find unless you plan far ahead.

Your actual reward savings may vary based on how much the ticket or hotel you purchase would have cost in cash.

Estimated Rewards

The value of a JetBlue point tends to vary between 1 cent and 2 cents per point, and more expensive flights tend to have a lower value per point. So if a ticket costs $100 it will require between 5,000 and 10,000 JetBlue points. JetBlue points are a fair deal if you live in New York, Boston, or Los Angeles, and want to take your award travel on JetBlue flights.

So for example, if you bought a $200 hotel room, you must have 20,000 points in your account to get credit for it. You can't ask for partial credit like a similar card, the Barclaycard Arrival.

Where can you use your points?

While there are better cards if you are looking for domestic flights, this card offers great value for free hotel nights and is also very versatile for flight awards, especially if you are saving up for a long international trip thanks to 20+ airline transfer partners, including American Airlines. Starwood points can be used for nights at Westin, Sheraton, W, Le Meridien, St. Regis, Four Points, and Aloft hotels. Starwood offers hotel nights for some of the lowest point prices, making them great for earning via credit card spending.

Airline programs you can transfer to include American, Delta, US Airways, British Airways, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, Alitalia, Asiana, China Eastern, Emirates, Ethiad, Air France / KLM, Hawaiian, JAL, Lufthansa, Qatar, Singapore, Virgin Atlantic.

The transfers can take several days, but savvy travelers like the fact that you get a 5,000 mile bonus for every 20,000 points you transfer. American Airlines is one of the most valuable programs to use for international awards.

Estimated Rewards

We estimate the value of Starpoints at about 2.5 cents per dollar for hotel nights. For example, you can get a hotel that might go for $250 a night for 6,000 points + $110. For flight rewards, we generally assume you transfer miles to airlines and get a 5,000 mile bonus for every 20,000 points you transfer. However we factor this in by adding 25% to the dollar value we estimate for flight awards and don't add the 5,000 points to the annual points earned total.

Your actual reward savings may vary based on the price in cash you would have paid for a hotel night, and number of points required.

Where can you use your points?

MileagePlus miles can be used for travel on United and its partners, including Air Canada, Lufthansa, ANA, Singapore, Thai, Swiss, Austrian, TAM, Asiana, Avianca, TACA, Copa and more.

Estimated Rewards

United miles are best saved for International trips in Economy Class, particularly to Europe where you can get a roundtrip for 60,000 miles. Availability at this mileage price is generally very good thanks to United's Star Alliance partners including Lufthansa and Swiss Airlines. Asia can be reached for 70,000 - 85,000 miles, a decent deal when cash tickets run $1,500 or more.

Business Class flights can also be a good use of miles, but generally only if you can find seats on United's own flights at its lowest Saver level price. You can get to Europe for 115,000 miles roundtrip and most of Asia or Australia for 140,000 miles on United flights. The issue is, availability at these prices can be very spotty. Flights on partners in Business Class are more expensive, with 140,000 miles required for Europe and 160,000 miles for much of Asia.

Availability to Hawaii is decent in Economy Class, with United offering more flights to Hawaii than any other airline, though at peak times you may have to pay 60,000 or 80,000 miles instead of the lowest 45,000 mile Saver price. Getting to Central and northern South America is also easy thanks to partners Copa and Avianca / TACA.

Run of the mill domestic flights in Economy Class usually aren't a great deal, which is the case with most of the big airlines. You'll probably pay closer to 37,500 miles for your trip if you're not flexible with dates than the lowest advertised 25,000 miles.

You can get better domestic travel value from the rewards you get from your card spending with Southwest points or bank points cards like the BankAmericard Travel Rewards card. But if you go to places where tickets usually cost $500 or more like some smaller cities with limited service, or buy last minute tickets, then saving United miles for these trips can be a good deal. Long flights across the country in First Class are also a good deal instead of paying $1,500 or more if you can find dates at the Saver 50,000 mile level.

Where can you use your points?

Earns Lufthansa Mile & More points. They can be used for travel on Lufthansa, Austrian, Brussels, Swiss, as well as all Star Alliance partners, including United and Air Canada. Just note Lufthansa places significant surcharges on awards across the ocean on its own flights, as well as Swiss, Austrian, and Brussels. United and LOT awards don't have this issue.

You can't mix these points with your existing United miles, but you can definitely use them to book United flights to anywhere United flies. A good deal is using them for First Class seats on United flights in the U.S., which cost less than 35,000 Lufthansa miles versus 50,000 if you used United miles.

SkyMiles can be used for travel on Delta, Alaska Airlines, and SkyTeam partners including Air France, KLM, Korean Airlines, Aeromexico, Alitalia, China Southern, and Aeroflot. Other partners include Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Australia and Air Tahiti Nui.

Beware that availability on Air France and KLM can be very limited for flights to and from the U.S.

Estimated Rewards

SkyMiles has three levels for award prices: Saver, Standard, and Peak. Most of the time you can expect to pay the Standard level for awards. For Economy Class, that means domestic awards will run you about 32,500 miles round-trip, those to Hawaii will run about 65,000 miles, and those to Europe will run around 90,000 miles.

A good value for Delta miles is trips to Australia, where its partner Virgin Australia has excellent availability on its flights out of Los Angeles for 100,000 miles in Economy and 160,000 miles in Business Class. It's also a good choice to Italy if you are able to get to a city that Alitalia serves, with good availability in Economy for the Saver rate of 60,000 miles and Business Class for 125,000 miles. London is also generally easy to get to via New York at the same rates thanks to its partnership with Virgin Atlantic. Delta is stingy to Asia, though if you're just looking for one award seat on a flight you can find many more options than for two seats.

Your actual reward value may vary based on how much the ticket or hotel you purchase would have cost in cash.

  • Go far and wide with points redeemable on over a dozen airlines. Visit the Alaska Airlines website for the airline partner list.

Where can you use your miles?

Alaska Airlines miles can be used for flights on Alaska Airlines, but they can also be used for American, Delta, Qantas, British Airways, Emirates, Air France / KLM, Aeromexico, LAN, and Fiji Airways.

While you can't combine Alaska miles with the miles of other programs like Delta, you can use them to book any flight a partner makes available to its own frequent flyers at the 'saver' mileage levels. No U.S. program has a broader range of partners, and is one you should consider crediting flights to if you don't fly enough to hit 'elite' status with any one of American or Delta.

Estimated Rewards

If you don't fly Alaska a lot, we recommend this card if you can take advantage of the Companion voucher, plan to go to Hawaii on Alaska for as few as 40,000 miles roundtrip, or plan to take advantage of its unique international partner options, which offer access to some good Business Class and First Class deals. Most are easily bookable online at AlaskaAir.com. Unlike Delta, Alaska has good access to flights with Air France and KLM to Europe, particularly in Business Class at 125,000 miles roundtrip. It also has access to flights on Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Emirates, British Airways, and more at competitive mileage prices. It's tougher to earn miles with Alaska's program, but when you do they can be valuable for these premium awards.

Where can you use your points?

This card earns American Express Membership Rewards points. Transfer into miles with Delta, AeroMexico, Air Canada, Alitalia, All Nippon, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, El Al, Air France / KLM, Frontier, Hawaiian, Iberia, JetBlue, Singapore, Virgin Atlantic, and Virgin America.

Transferring to Delta miles is one of the most popular options, but savvy flyers like using Membership Rewards points to take advantage of deals with Air France / KLM Flying Blue, British Airways, Singapore, and Virgin Atlantic.

You can also redeem your points for flights booked via American Express Travel with every 10,000 points worth $100 in travel value. Most savvy flyers prefer transferring points directy to airline programs for higher potential value.

Estimated Rewards

Membership Rewards points are best saved for topping off Delta SkyMiles balances you already have or saving for premium international flights using mileage transfer partners like Aeroplan, Air France, or ANA. Beware though that most award flights flown by non-US based partners incur fuel surcharges of hundreds of dollars. You can avoid these by transfering to Delta miles or using Air Canada miles to redeem on United, and British Airways miles to redeem on American.

For domestic flights, British Airways charges as little as 9,000 points roundtrip for short nonstop flights, and American and Alaska are partners of British Airways. The catch is you need to live in a city with a lot of American or Alaska Airlines nonstop flights as British Airways charges extra if your trip involves a connecting flight.

So for the rest of us, transfering to Delta is the most viable domestic option. Expect to pay closer to 32,500 points for a domestic flight on Delta rather than the lowest advertised 25,000 mile level. You can also transfer to Air Canada to redeem on United Airlines, which tends to offer more seats at the 25,000 mile level, though domestic flights like this often aren't the best use of miles from a premium card.

While not always advertised, this card also offers a companion certificate for domestic travel on Delta flights each year you renew your card and pay the annual fee. It's valid on certain fare classes and carries some restrictions like only being valid on some of its lowest L, U, and T economy fares, and subject to limited seats on any given flight, but if you're flexible it can be useful.

Where can you use your points?

The downside is high value tickets like first / business class can cost more this way than with traditional airline miles, but you don't have to worry about availability on specific days.

Estimated Rewards

Points can be used like to purchase airline tickets via PenFed's online or phone booking. Points are worth about 1 cent each.

Bonus Offer

Get up to 30,000 Bonus Miles after your first purchase. Offer ends May 30, 2015.

Card Highlights
  • Get up to 30,000 Bonus Miles after your first purchase.
  • Earn 1 mile for every $1 you spend in net purchases
  • Double Miles on Korean Air ticket purchases.
  • Redeem miles for award travel and upgrades on any SkyTeam partner, including Korean Air and domestic carriers such as Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines

Where can you use your points?

SKYPASS is the mileage program of Korean Airlines and miles can be used on Korean Airlines flights, which are the best deal. They can also be used on Sky Team partners like Delta, Air France, KLM, and Alitalia. Just beware that on non-Delta flights you'll be hit with large fuel surcharges for most flights that cross the Atlantic.

Estimated Rewards

Mileage experts find SKYPASS miles most useful for First Class award flights on Korean Airlines. There is very generous availability so it's usually easy to find an award seat, eaier than most airlines for luxurious First Class. Korean has more gateway cities in the U.S. than any other Asian airline, including Atlanta, New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, and can get you further to almost everywhere in Asia and Australia. A First Class award to most of Asia will cost 160,000 miles roundtrip.

This is a good companion for a Chase Ultimate Rewards card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred if you're after First Class awards to Asia, as Ultimate Rewards cards let you transfer miles directly into SKYPASS to earn even faster. A 160,000 mile award in First Class, which would typically cost $8,000 or more in cash, is an outstanding deal with miles. We only recommend this card if you plan to fly on Korean Airlines or want to save up for First Class travel to Asia.

Where can you use your points?

LifeMiles is the mile program of Avianca and Taca airlines. But you can use LifeMiles on any Star Alliance airline, including United, Air Canada, and Lufthansa. It's easy to check options online at LifeMiles.com.

Estimated Rewards

LifeMiles charges 25,000 miles for an Economy award ticket in the U.S. or Canada on United and Air Canada and 50,000 miles for domestic First Class. For trips to Europe from the U.S. you can fly for 60,000 miles roundtrip in Economy and 105,000 miles in Business Class. Hawaii is 40,000 miles in Economy and 80,000 miles in Business Class / 2 cabin First Class. These prices are subject to award seats being available, and you can check the availability online at LifeMiles.com.

Mile enthusiasts like LifeMiles because they often offer members promotions with the chance to buy miles for about 1.5 cents a piece. That lets you buy enough miles for a Business Class award to Europe for $1,600, which is a great deal. And if you're earning miles from the card you can buy fewer miles and get to that award faster.

Where can you use your points?

You can use your points to 'erase' the cost of any travel purchase made on your card. Just note you must have enough points to erase the entire cost of a single purchase in order to do so. You can't ask for partial credit like a similar card, the Bank of America Travel Rewards Card.

You can also transfer to Air Canada to redeem on United Airlines, which tends to offer more seats at the 25,000 mile level, though domestic flights like this aren't always the most valuable use of miles.

Dividend Miles can be used on travel with US Airways and American Airlines, and as fo March 31, 2014, OneWorld partners including British Airways and Cathay Pacific.

Estimated Rewards

US Airways miles, like American Airlines miles, are not great deals for domestic Economy Class travel, but are good deals for international Business Class and First Class travel. Save up these miles for trips to Europe or Asia in the big seat using partner airlines. You'll have to call on the phone to locate and book these flights. Domestic First Class is also a decent deal thanks to the American Airlines merger, as American tends to have generous availability of First Class seats at the lowest award prices.

Your actual reward savings may vary based on how much the ticket or hotel you purchase would have cost in cash.

Where can you use your points?

You can use your points for travel on any airline at any time via MyBlackCardRewards.com or redeem for hotels or gift card. Just note that while this card does offer airport lounge access, it is limited within the U.S. This should also not be confused with the Centurion Card from American Express, which is commonly referred to as the 'Black Card.' That card carries an annual fee of $2,500, includes airline elite status, and is part of the Membership Rewards program. This Visa Black Card is unrelated to that card.

Estimated Rewards

Every point is worth 2 cents toward airfare, so 10,000 points gives you $200 in airfare value. You can also use points for hotels and gift cards, though in these cases points are worth 1 cent each so 10,000 points gives you $100 in value.

Our calculations assume you make all of your Airline and Hotel purchaes at Travelocity, earning the 3 point per dollar bonus.

  • Travel with ease and enjoy global acceptancewith your Citi chip credit card
  • 25% savings on eligible in-flight purchases when you use your card

Where can you use your points?

This card earns American Express Membership Rewards points. Transfer into miles with Delta, AeroMexico, Air Canada, Alitalia, All Nippon, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, El Al, Air France / KLM, Frontier, Hawaiian, Iberia, JetBlue, Singapore, Virgin Atlantic, and Virgin America.

Transferring to Delta miles is an option, but savvy flyers like using Membership Rewards points to take advantage of deals with Air France / KLM Flying Blue, British Airways, Singapore, and Virgin Atlantic.

You can also redeem your points for flights booked via American Express Travel with every 10,000 points worth $100 in travel value. We prefer transferring points directy to airline programs for higher potential value.

Estimated Rewards

Membership Rewards points are good for topping off Delta SkyMiles balances you already have or saving for premium international flights using mileage transfer partners like Aeroplan, Air France, or ANA. Beware though that many award flights flown by non-US based partners incur fuel surcharges of hundreds of dollars.

So by transfering your points to British Airways you can book flights on American and Alaska for a low number of points. The catch is you need to live in a city with a lot of American or Alaska Airlines nonstop flights as British Airways charges extra miles if your trip involves a connecting flight.

But if you can't take advantage of that Delta will be your go-to transfer option. Expect to pay closer to 32,500 points for a domestic flight on Delta rather than the lowest advertised 25,000 mile level. You can also transfer to Air Canada to redeem on United Airlines, which tends to offer more seats at the 25,000 mile level, though domestic flights like this aren't always the most valuable use of miles.

Where can you use your points?

Dividend Miles can be used on travel with US Airways, and American Airlines, and as of March 31, 2014, OneWorld partners including British Airways and Cathay Pacific.

You can use your HawaiianMiles on all Hawaiian Airlines flights. Hawaiian serves San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, Portland, Seattle, Phoenix, and New York so if you live near those airports and plan to fly to Hawaii you can consider this card. It's tougher to get full value out of this card if you don't live near those airports.

You can also use your miles on partners like American Airlines, JetBlue, Virgin America, and Virgin Atlantic, but the redemption rates on these airlines are all worse than if you earned miles in their own programs. So HawaiianMiles are most useful if you plan to travel to Hawaii on Hawaiian's own flights.

Estimated Rewards

You can book a roundtrip to or from Hawaii for 40,000 miles at the SuperSaver level and 60,000 miles at the Saver level, or 80,000 miles at the 'Flex' level. First Class awards are 80,000 miles at the Saver level and 160,000 miles at the Flex level, with upgrades for 50,000 miles round-trip or 100,000 miles for the Flex level.

See details at United.com. Card information for this product is not made available by the issuer and is subject to change - the information here should be considered directional for comparison.

This card earns 1.5 MileagePlus miles per dollar spent, a 50% bonus over other typical airline credit cards. It also includes full United Club membership, which is up to a $500 annual value. Your first and second checked bags are free for you and a traveling companion, and you'll enjoy Premier Access boarding privileges. United will also waive fees on close-in award bookings (though not change fees) and you'll get special privileges with Hyatt and Avis.

You can get to Europe for 115,000 miles roundtrip and most of Asia or Australia for 140,000 miles on United flights at the Saver price. The issue is, availability at this price level can be very spotty. Flights on partners in Business Class have better Saver price availability, but are more expensive, with 140,000 miles required for Europe and 160,000 miles for much of Asia.

Availability to Hawaii is decent in Economy Class, with United offering more flights to Hawaii than any other airline, though at peak times you may have to pay 62,500 or 80,000 miles instead of the lowest 45,000 mile Saver price. Getting to Central and northern South America is also easy thanks to partners Copa and Avianca / TACA.

Run of the mill domestic flights in Economy Class usually aren't a great deal, which is the case with most of the big airlines. You'll probably pay closer to 37,500 miles for your trip if you're not flexible with dates instead of the lowest advertised 25,000 miles.

Domestic travel generally isn't a great deal if you're just earning points via credit card spending. Cards that earn Southwest points or bank points cards like the BankAmericard Travel Rewards cards are better suited for that. But if you go to places where tickets usually cost $500 or more like some smaller cities with limited service, or if you buy last minute tickets, then saving United miles for these trips can be a good deal. Long flights across the country in First Class can also be a good deal at 50,000 miles if you can find dates at the Saver level instead of paying $1,500 or more in cash.

Where can you use your points?
