At MileCards.com we think few things can ruin a good vacation more than a delayed flight. With more and more awards with miles requiring you have to make a connection to get where you want to go, on time flights are more important than ever.
Specifically for Anchorage’s Ted Stevens International Airport (ANC), MileCards.com analyzed raw data released this week by the Department of Transportation detailing the on-time performance of airlines during all of 2013. The DOT defines an on-time flight as one that arrives or departs within 15 minutes of the scheduled time.
For Anchorage in 2013…
United ranked at the bottom
Only 72% of United flights to and from Anchorage were on time in 2013, which is worse than its national average of 79%. With over 3,000 flights to and from Anchorage in 2013, United was the second largest carrier.
Alaska’s big operation led the on-time rankings
Alaska Airlines had the best overall record with 87% of flights on time and the average flight running right on schedule with an average delay of 0 minutes. That number factors flights that arrived early less those that arrived late. Alaska is the largest airline by far at Anchorage with nearly 30,000 flights to and from the airport in 2013.
Merger partners didn’t fare well
American and US Airways, which have now merged, ranked near the bottom of on-time performance. Just 74% and 76% of their flights were on time last year. American flights were the latest arrivals overall, with its flights running 15 minutes late on average.
Anchorage ran more on time than the nation
Ted Stevens International was a punctual airpot in 2013, with 86% of flights on time versus the national average of 79%. The average flight was just one minute behind schedule..
“Anchorage Ted Stevens International did very well for on time performance,” said Brian Karimzad, director of MileCards.com. “Alaska Airlines is uniquely prepared for conditions in Anchorage and its strong performance lifted the airport overall, making Anchorage one of the more reliable airports in the nation.”
