A first look at the new design

United’s current website is old – straight out of the 1990s old.

But it’s been talking about upgrading its website for almost 3 years now, since the merger of United and Continental.

So a lot of frequent fliers are eagerly anticipating a modern, fresh And for the first time, we have a clean look at how the new home page will look:

It’s clean, it’s a lot more elegant. And it looks a lot like the new United mobile app for the iPhone. And it looks a lot like a Windows 8 interface. You can see how many Premier Dollars you’ve earned, your upgrade balance, and the flight status of flights you have already booked.

But the real test will be functionality. today may not be very pretty, but it’s really good at some things, like…

  • Booking award tickets. It’s great at offering partner awards and showing a clean calendar display.
  • Access to inventory information. is the only site with an ‘Expert Mode’ that lets you see the actual fare class availability on flights, which is really helpful when you’re trying to diagnose an upgrade or fare discrepancy.
  • Flight status. has transparent upgrade lists, lets you see exactly what plane is coming in to serve your flight, and showing flight standby lists.

We don’t think (and hope) these functions don’t change, and get better with the new site.

The reviews of the new app are mixed – more new skin than function, but at least retaining the old functionality. The new website should start  phasing in over the next few months in stages.
