Our review: Easy to redeem mile program + baggage savings
If you fly American Airlines a couple times a year and pay for checking bags on domestic flights, this credit card is an easy choice. You’ll save the annual fee and more since it now offers a free first checked bag on domestic American Airlines flights. That’s worth $50 round trip. And you can extend that benefit to up to 4 other people in your reservation. You don’t even need to use the credit card to book the flight, as the benefit is tied to your AAdvantage frequent flyer number as long as you hold the card.
Another feature not found on any other card is a 10% rebate on mileage redemption, up to at 10,000 mile rebate each year. That means a 25,000 mile coach award will really only cost you 22,500 miles which is a nice deal.
Priority boarding will help you get on the plane earlier — just after American’s own elite frequent flyers, and ahead of general boarding. You and up to 4 companions can use this.
You’ll also be eligible for a $100 travel credit each year you spend $30,000 on the card. That more than offsets the $95 annual fee of the card.
But the real reason to consider this card is American’s great mileage program.

Change award tickets with no fee
A special feature of American’s program is the ability to change dates on your award reservation with no fee — as long as you keep your destination and origin the same. This compares to a charge of $100 or more on other airlines and offers you peace of mind and flexibility with your vacation plans.
Availability of awards is generally very good — a recent study found awards on desired dates about 57% of the time, and the most frequent of flyers swear it has the widest availability of any global carrier. That means you have a real shot at getting good value out of the 30,000 mile introductory bonus on the days and times you want.
You can earn American miles with a credit card that has a lower fee though. The Starwood Preferred Guest American Express has a lower fee than the American AAdvantage Visa, and allows you to transfer the points you earn directly to American airlines miles at an even exchange or better.
