Radisson credit card – Club Carlson Premier Rewards review

Club Carlson PremierIf you have any desire to stay at Radisson hotels on your next vacation, the Club Carlson Premier Rewards credit card is a good value. It earns 5x Club Carlson Gold Points per dollar on most purchases, and we value these points at about 0.5 cents each (Club Carlson has sold points for about 0.5 points each in the past).

Sometimes you’ll get more out of them (like a $350 hotel room in New York for 50,000 points), other less (like a $100 hotel room in Minnesota for 28,000 points). But since you’re earning 5x points on every dollar, it’s a bit like earning 2.5 cents each time you put a dollar on the card, which is a respectable value for your money.

Put another way, spending just $10,000 on the card will get you the 50,000 points for the most expensive of Radisson properties, which can be a decent value.

  • Earn 10x points per dollar at Carlson hotels
  • Earn 5x points per dollar on all other eligible purchases
  • 85,000 bonus Gold Points – receive 50,000 Gold Points after your first purchase plus 35,000 points once you spend $2,500 on your card within the first 90 days.
  • 40,000 renewal bonus points each year you renew the card
  • Bonus award nights – when you redeem Gold Points for 2 or more consecutive Award Nights, your last night is free
  • $75 annual fee

Free extra award night every time. The unique feature on this card is a free night every time you book an award stay of 2 nights or more. So if you want to go away for a weekend, you’ll only have to pay one night’s worth in points. With this benefit you can effectively double the value of your points if you primarily book weekends. If you book longer stays you’ll still get the free night, but it is just one free night each stay. You can do this up to 50 times per year.

Healthy intro bonus. The card offers an 85,000 point intro bonus (50,000 with the first purchase, 35,000 once you spend $2,500 within the first 90 days). The most expensive hotel in points is 50,000 so you’re clear to get a free night anywhere, and more likely 2 or 3 since most hotels cost less than 50,000 points. Assuming we value the points at 0.5 cents each, the bonus is worth about $425, but can be worth double if you use the points for 2 night stays where that 2nd night is free.

Instant status. You also get Club Carlson Gold status. That gets you a free in room welcome gift, early check-in/late check-out, and complimentary room upgrades. This normally requires 20 stays or 35 nights per year.

Do I understand correctly that I can receive 85,000 bonus points if I spend $2,500 on eligible purchases within the first 90 days? If so, what are considered “eligible purchases”? Can this card be used everywhere that VISA credit cards are acceptable, e.g., grocery stores, theaters, etc.?

@Catherine – That’s right. And the card can be used anywhere a VISA is accepted. Eligible purchases are just about anything but cash advances.
