50% bonus on Starwood points into US Airways miles

by on Tue March 13, 2012 • No Comment

US Airways has a promotion offering a 50% bonus on hotel points transferred into your US Airways Dividend miles account through March 31, 2012.

This is a great opportunity for Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express holders (our pick for Best Overall Mile Credit Card of 2012). Starwood points already transfer 1:1 into US Airways miles with a 5,000 point bonus for every 20,000 points you transfer, up to 79,999 per day.

So with the 50% bonus you can turn 20,000 Starwood points into 37,500 US Airways miles (20,000 points + 5,000 mile transfer bonus + 50% US Airways bonus). The optimal amount to transfer to maximize the bonus is 60,000 points — you’ll get 15,000 points for the usual transfer bonus, plus 50% on the total, turning that 60,000 points into 112,500 miles. That’s enough for a roundtrip business class ticket to Europe worth over $3,000.

The reason 60,000 is optimal is that you’re limited to 79,999 points per day, and 60,000 is the last point where you get that 5,000 point bonus for every 20,000 point transfer.

The fine print on the US Airways bonus offer says you’re only eligible for one 50% bonus per account, so if you tried to do multiple transfers you may only get one bonus.
