Avis Presidents Club

Avis President’s Club is an invitation-only elite program for car rentals, currently available to holders of the prestigious Centurion (Black) Card from American Express, or…for the rest of us…the United Mileage Plus Club or Presidential Plus credit cards from Chase. They also offers access to all United Club lounges.

Here is what Avis President’s Club status offers…

  • Free 2-class car upgrades (i.e., midsize to a premium) from every intermediate or higher rental
  • Guaranteed car availability — even without a reservation — you can walk up to the counter and they will pull a car for you on sold out days
  • Up to 30% off standard rental rates
  • Free day of GPS system for rentals of 3 days or more
  • Custom reservation hotline

Anecdotally, people who use the President’s Club status say they are pleased with the upgrades. Some report locations offering them the best vehicle on the lot, including Cadillacs and Infinitis. Your experience may vary, but the frequent travelers at FlyerTalk report good experiences — no guarantees of great cars every time — but experiences that are much better than renting at Avis without any sort of status. Here is a sampling of what they have to say:

“I was PC for a short bit. I regularly got upgraded from full-size to “luxury” (and I use that term loosely with Avis), specialty cars, or premium cars. Other than the upgrades, I can’t remember getting any special treatment… no welcome party, valet back to the airport, etc.”

“Routinely upgraded to Luxury class from Intermediate. Lots of Caddys, lots of SUVs. Of course, that also gets you Lincoln Town Cars and Mercury Grand Marquis (if there are any left) and Ford Crown Victorias… Boo.”

“I am used to be upgraded to Caddys from Full Size cars and also being given SUVs in the winter time. Last rental I got a brand new BMW 328i with I-Drive (which is really bad IMHO) from IAH, but the rental was appreciated.”

“I almost always receive an upgrade (2 class), and often if I speak to the desk I can talk myself into a speciality car. I absolutely love the guaranteed availability, I just used it this afternoon to book a car for 10 days. Every location within 50 miles was listed online as sold out. I called customer service, and they are arranging to have a full size car made available to be at the location of my preference. I have found that if I mention the magic words “President’s Club” I see hoops appear and employees start a jumpin'”

I am trying to extend a booking but have been kept hanging on by your call center for 10 minutes. the agreement number is 96264154. can you help?

Frankly, I’m disappointed with both Avis and United. The incentive provided for the United Presidential Plus card to receive President’s Club status with Avis was downgraded within under two years. Furthermore, in reviewing prices online without using a Wizard #, I was able to attain a better rate than with the Presidential Plus status. CS Rep said that is how it works sometimes.

I hear Hertz is offering some good incentives these days.

@Gil – The President’s Club status is still valid on the Presidential Plus card. The sister card, the United Club Card had it downgraded, but if you have Presidential Plus card from before the United Club Card days the status should be part of your Avis account. If not call them at 1-757-687-2008 to have it activated.

As for prices…sorry to hear about that, but yes unfortunately that Wizard number isn’t always the best rate. is a good site that keeps track of the various coupons and applies them, and you still get your Avis or Hertz benefits when you book.

With havin so much written content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or
copyright infringement? My site has a lot of exclusive content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but it looks like a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my permission. Do you know any methods to help protect against content from being stolen? I’d certainly appreciate it.

    Dear Avis,

I tried to call the number listed in Syracuse N.Y. to reach the airport office – no answer. The people I talked to in the Phillipines had such a strong accent I couldn’t understand them.

You talk about customer service, so far I’m still waiting.

@Hugh- Yeah, it’s basically one person there who handles the requests at that number. There should be a voicemail and she was pretty responsive when we tried.
