Qatar is in diplomatic turmoil, but Qatar Airways flights are still going strong, and there’s wide open award space from the U.S. that’s a great use of American AAdvantage miles or Cathay Pacific Asia Miles.

You won’t find Qatar Airways award space visible on the AA.com website, but a great place to check is the Asia Miles site, that lets you see availability for a week at a time.

Here’s space in Business Class from New York to Qatar’s hub in Doha in July for 2 people. Dates that display 70,000 miles + 1,874 HKD (about $250 USD) in the Asia Miles view below are bookable with OneWorld partner miles like AAdvantage or Asia Miles.

Even the holidays have good availability…(dates with a surcharge of 1874 HKD have Qatar flights available)

Many flights have 4 or 5 seats available at a time, and there’s plenty of space almost a year out in May of 2018

It’s not just New York to Doha that gets in on the action.

Los Angeles to Doha has many dates available.

Chicago to Doha is also available, but not quite as many days as New York to Doha…

Flying to Doha alone isn’t the most useful way to use Qatar Airways awards. The real value is in connecting in Doha to destinations that are usually hard to book as awards, like the Maldives or South Africa.

Male has plenty of space available that will cost just 70,000 AAdvantage miles one way in Business Class. The price you see here is using Asia Miles just for the Doha to Male segment.

And Johannesburg has some dates with multiple seats available at a time. An AAdvantage award from the U.S. costs 75,000 miles one way with no fuel surcharges.

Qatar flies to Doha from the following U.S. cities:

  • Boston
  • Chicago
  • Dallas
  • Houston
  • Los Angeles
  • Miami
  • New York
  • Philadelphia
  • Washington, D.C.

It’s probably the best way to get from the U.S. to Africa or India with AA miles at a reasonable price. If you’re using Asia Miles or British Airways Avios you’ll pay surcharges of about $250 each way.

Would South Africa be 70K from US to Doha and another 75K from Doha to Johannesburg? If so, is that a good redemption compared with the alternatives (i.e. what is United to So. Africa in business)? Or perhaps you are saying the Doha route is readily available, even if it is 150K each way (which would beat nonexistent cheaper but unavailable routings on other airlines).

    I enjoy your posts!

@Neil – With AAdvantage it’s 75k all the way through U.S. to Johannesburg if you go via Doha.
