United’s MileagePlus X app is a great way to earn extra United miles for holiday shopping or celebrations. You use the app to buy electronic gift cards that you can use on the spot in the store, save for later, or use online.
Every gift card you buy earns you extra miles for every dollar you spend. Plus you earn points and miles from whatever credit card you use to pay in MileagePlus X.
So you earn up to 5 United miles per dollar from MileagePlus X, plus whatever miles your credit card earns, including category bonuses like those for dining when you pay with a Visa or Mastercard like the Chase Sapphire Preferred.
And you can also earn more miles when you shop online by going to the MileagePlus shopping mall first, clicking on the link to the store you’re using (which makes you eligible to earn miles from the shopping mall), and then paying with your MileagePlus X gift card, which earns miles from MileagePlus X, letting you double dip on United miles.
This holiday season, all of the below merchants (over 115 of them) let you earn 5x miles when you use the app to pay for purchases or gift cards – either online or in person. So a $100 purchase can earn you 500 miles.
One catch is you generally can’t buy a gift card larger than $500. So if you’re hoping to pick up the tab for an office holiday lunch, check with the restaurant to make sure you can split the bill into separate gift cards.
And if you’re buying from a retailer, there are no refunds – just store credit for exchanges and returns – since you’re buying with a gift card, not cash.
Other than that, keep these 5x mile retailers in mind. Most of them earn more from MileagePlus X than you’ll earn from other shopping portals like Chase Ultimate Rewards shopping, so it’s always worth a look in the app before you shop.
