Redeeming your hotel points for hotels in Southeast Asia may not always present the best value for your points because the cash price to book at even luxury properties can be so low. Nevertheless, we have found a few IHG hotels in Southeast Asia that are at least worth redeeming IHG Rewards points at some times. We have categorized the best redemptions by travel for couples, luxury, and budget.
In order to determine points values, we checked the same dates at all IHG properties that fell into our categories in Southeast Asia. We looked at a couple of low season dates and a couple of high season dates to try to get a good value range for each hotel. Depending on when you are traveling, the value you find may be outside of the range that we have listed here. You should always check the value you are getting for your points before you decide to book.
We value IHG points at about 0.5 cents each. If you are getting at least that much value out of your points, it is worth considering using your points to book. Any value that is close to or above one cent per point is very good.
Southeast Asia is generally a very cheap place to travel, once you get there. You’ll find that most of the values we present here overlap 0.5 cents per point. This makes it especially important to check the cash rates for your stay when you are looking to use points in Southeast Asia before you book your room.
If the value you are getting for your points is less than 0.5 cents, you should consider booking with cash, staying at a different hotel, or even looking into alternatives like Airbnb, unless you have so many points that you don’t know what to do with them all. You also have the ability to make a reservation that is partially on points and partially cash by making two separate bookings.
Here are our picks for the best value IHG properties in Southeast Asia:
Only InterContinental hotels were included in the luxury hotel category.
If you’re looking for luxury in Southeast Asia and want to use your IHG points, the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort is going to be, by far, your best choice. The InterContinental Danang is a gorgeous property that is located on one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in the region. It’s no wonder that IHG and many other hotel programs have chosen to put very luxury properties here!
Parking and a daily buffet breakfast at the resort are complimentary for all hotel guests. Points values ranged from 0.60 to 0.90 cents per point, giving this hotel the highest average points value in the region when compared to other IHG hotels.
If Thailand is more your style, but you’re still looking for that luxurious experience, the InterContinental Samui Baan Taling Ngam Resort might be the hotel for you. This hotel is also given 5-stars and is located just 11 miles from the Wat Khunaram Temple. The property has six dining and drinking options as well as seven outdoor pools. The price of this hotel was completely constant over the dates we checked, and points had a value of 0.65 cents each.
Hotels that cost 20,000 points per night or less were considered to be in the budget category.
A 4-star hotel for only 15,000 points per night is pretty impressive, even in Southeast Asia! Better yet, the hotel is located only 12 km from Phuket International Airport, so you won’t even have to work that hard to get here (after you fly all the way to Southeast Asia that is…). The hotel is also located right alongside Sirinat National Park and is most well known for its well-preserved white sand beaches. Redeeming your points at this property should give you a value of between 0.49 and 0.92 cents per point. The high end of that range was the highest value we saw for any IHG hotel in Southeast Asia.
This hotel is new and is now accepting reservations for January 16, 2017 and onward. The hotel is located on Nopparat Thara Beach and is only 26 km from Krabi International Airport. Since it’s a new hotel, no one has stayed yet, but like with any Holiday Inn Express property, guests will be provided with complimentary breakfast each morning of their stay. The value for using points ranged between 0.28 and 0.55 cents per point. At the lower end of the range it would probably make more sense to book your room with cash, but there is some value to be had at the upper end of the range.
You know there are going to be some good beaches around when you are staying on an island in Thailand. The resort has two outdoor pools, one of which is adults only, and a kids club making this a great getaway for couples and families alike. If you want to explore off of the property, heading to Maya Bay is worth your while – the movie ‘The Beach’ was filmed there and it is stunning. Points values at this property were between 0.32 and 0.59 on the dates we checked. At the upper end of the range, it is probably worth redeeming your points. If cash rates are low during the dates of your stay, it may make more sense to save your points for another trip.
InterContinental hotels are in the running for our best luxury travel categories, but this hotel is a luxury hotel at a more reasonable price. The InterContinental Hua Hin is classified as a 5-star hotel, but only costs 35,000 points per night – a 15,000 point per night savings over the other two InterContinentals on our list. Breakfast is included at the hotel and parking is free for all guests.
The beach at Hua Hin is said to be a destination in and of itself. We found values between 0.37 and 0.59 cents per point on the destinations that we checked. Again, this hotel is sometimes worth using points at but during some dates you may be better off using cash.
These hotels are just a start – it’s always worth spending time to research off the beaten path hotels and specifics for your travel dates. For more information, read our guide to getting the most out of your IHG points.
