There’s some good award space from both the West Coast and East Coast to Europe in Business Class on Iberia next July, which is perfect for using your American AAdvantage miles to avoid $1,000+ in British Airways fuel surcharges.
If you’ve been searching for awards lately you know there’s very little space on American’s own flights to Europe.
Here’s the grim picture from Chicago to London, with nothing available in Business Class at the MileSAAver level.
But Iberia serves Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York via its Madrid hub.
And as of now you can book flights right up through mid July, the most coveted time to get to Europe.
Business Class awards on Iberia cost just 57,500 miles one way with AAdvantage, plus some modest surcharges.
Iberia award space doesn’t display on the American Airlines website, but you can find it through other sites like BA.com and Expertflyer.com (here’s how to search for Iberia award flights).
If you book right now, there is good award space for two or more people from most airports Iberia serves from the U.S., as seen in these ExpertFlyer searches.
Even Los Angeles – Madrid nonstop has good award space, unlocking one of the toughest award challenges…
Here’s space the 2nd week of July.
Miami also gets in on the action…
New York has lots of space in early July…
Most of these options are for 2 seats at a time in Business Class, which is great for couples. Though some flights have 9 or more seats in Economy Class, like this one from Miami.
This space could dry up fast, so now is a good time to put something on hold (you can hold an award up to 5 days by calling AAdvantage on 800-882-8880) and start piecing together your plans. At 57,500 AAdvantage miles one way, it’s a great deal for peak summer travel. And Iberia’s Business Class is fully lie flat with direct access to the aisle, offering privacy for solo travelers, and nice ‘honeymoon’ seats for couples.
