United is out with a new sale on MileagePlus Saver awards in Economy Class.
From now until Monday, August 22, United is taking 8,888 miles each way off the price of roundtrip awards to Asia, for a discount of up to 25%.
So flights to North Asia cost 52,225 miles roundtrip instead of 70,000 miles. And flights to South Asia cost 62,224 miles instead of 80,000 miles.
This is the 2nd sale this week, on the heels of a 25% discount on domestic Saver awards.
Here’s the catch though…
Your trip must include nonstop flights on United between the U.S. and China in order to get the discount, even if you’re traveling beyond China. You can use a partner airline like Air China, Thai, Asiana, or Singapore Airlines to travel beyond China.
That’s not an impossible requirement, but it rules out flights through Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong on United that might be more convenient for your travel.
United flies the following nonstop routes from the U.S. to China:
San Francisco to…
Los Angeles to…
And besides China, you can reach these countries with the award sale:
North Asia: South Korea, Mongolia, and Taiwan.
South Asia: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Japan is its own region, and is not included in this sale, and neither is India, which is considered part of the Indian Subcontinent region.
But again, because you need to fly via China, you’re not going to get the most convenient routing with this sale price, like this from Los Angeles to Ho Chi Minh City:
Other things to keep in mind as you search…
It’s nice to see United getting creative with award sales, but we’d really like to see a discount on Business Class awards.
Economy Class fares to Asia are pretty cheap when you plan ahead, often around $500 – $700 roundtrip, so even at these sale prices it’s not often going to be a great value for your miles, especially with a stop in China required.
