New 60,000 point Citi HHonors Visa bonus (no fee): should you bite?

by on Thu January 21, 2016 • 1 Comment

Hilton HHonors

Hilton HonorsIf you’re in the market for the Citi Hilton HHonors Visa Signature with no annual fee, there’s now a 60,000 point offer available online.

You only need to spend $1,000 in the first 4 months of holding the card to qualify for the offer.

If you’ve had this card in the last 18 months you’re not eligible to earn the bonus again.

Is this the best deal?

The current standard offer for this card is 40,000 points, so this is a better deal than that. But in the last year the bonus on this card has gone as high as 75,000 points, and if you go through the process of booking a Hilton hotel online, you may find a deal for 50,000 points plus a $50 statement credit with an even lower spending requirement.

So you might want to hold off and see if an even better deal emerges later this year if you’re not in immediate need of more HHonors points, or try the offer that appears when you try to book a room on

What can you do with the points?

60,000 HHonors points will get you a free night or two at many Hilton family properties.

For example you can get three nights at the Doubletree or Hampton Inn near Universal Orlando, saving you over $450.

Or you can get a night at a beachfront resort on the Big Island in Hawaii, or 2 nights for $290 via a cash and points award of 20,000 points plus $145, saving you over half off the cash cost of 2 nights.

Are there better ways to earn HHonors points?

The single most lucrative way to earn HHonors points via a sign on bonus is actually via the Virgin Atlantic World Elite MasterCard. There’s a $90 upfront annual fee, but you can earn 75,000 Virgin miles after spending $12,000 in 6 months. Those Virgin miles convert to Hilton HHonors points with a 50% bonus, so you can turn 75,000 Virgin miles into 112,500 Hilton HHonors points.

In terms of top overall value, the Citi HHonors Reserve offers 2 free weekend nights after you meet the spending requirements, with a $75 annual fee. The key is you can use those 2 weekend nights at just about any Hilton hotel worldwide, so could be equivalent to 300,000 HHonors points or more considering how much some of the more desirable Hilton HHonors hotels cost with points. For example, a weekend night in July at the Grand Wailea in Hawaii costs 155,200 points a night, and it’s bookable with the free weekend night certificate.

Hilton keeps a list of hotels that are excluded from the free weekend night benefit here.
