If you’re sitting on American AAdvantage miles and trying to get to Europe next summer in Business Class, this is a subtle reminder to look beyond what you see on AA.com and consider Iberia awards.
Iberia flies to its Madrid hub from the following U.S. cities:
Fuel surcharges are more reasonable than with British Airways flights and award space is pretty good for most of next summer, which is a relief considering how hard it is to find award space on American’s own flights.
Iberia typically releases 2 award seats at a time in Business Class, and we searched June, July, and August 2016 for days with award space for at least 2 people from the U.S. to Madrid with the following results:
New York and Miami have by far the most space available, with flights available almost every day in July and August.
Even Los Angeles gets in on the action a few days, even though the flight from Los Angeles to Madrid only operates on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.
You can find the space by setting up an account on BA.com (the British Airways website) and searching for any of the above cities to Madrid.
Once you get to Madrid, you can connect on Iberia flights to most of Europe and parts of Africa to complete your journey.
How much does it cost?
Flights to anywhere in Europe with AAdvantage miles are just 50,000 miles one way in Business Class, though no stopovers are allowed.
How is flying Iberia?
If you see an A330 or A340-500 listed for your flight, it will have great new lie flat seats with direct access to the aisle from every seat like these pictured below, but if it’s any other A340 you will be stuck with older style angled flat seats. The good news is by next summer the installation of the new seats scheduled to be complete and getting stuck on a plane with old seats shouldn’t be a problem.
