There has been a scare in the champagne sipping mile enthusiast community about the inability to book Etihad Airways first class awards using American AAdvantage miles at the start of this week.

As of today though, agents can see and reserve the award space.

Here is one reserved for a June 23rd Los Angeles to Abu Dhabi. There’s only a one day hold as it’s a close in booking.

And one for an ‘Apartment’ flight on the A380 from Abu Dhabi to London in February. Note the date of the award hold expiration confirming this is a booking from today.

So the biggest scare since the concern AAdvantage was imposing fuel surcharges on all awards a year or two ago appears for now to be just that – a scare.

And if you really want one of these Etihad awards, book it as soon as you can as bargains like this aren’t always long for the world of miles and points.

American Airlines is doing little to endear itself to the Gulf carriers, so it’s a matter of time before some of that spills over to the world of frequent flyer program reciprocity.

And with free date changes up to 21 days before departure, there aren’t a lot of excuses for not getting something on the books if you really want to try it.
