Update: The functionality has been pulled a 2nd time. Delta clearly has the ability to offer this, and may roll it out, but not just yet.
Last week we reported that along with Delta’s new 2015 SkyMiles program, which allows booking one-way awards, Delta has just added the ability to search for award flights on partners China Eastern and China Southern on Delta.com.
But within a day, the functionality was pulled.
Now though, it’s back again (along with a whole bunch of space overall on Delta partners).
No telling whether it’s a glitch this time around, but the reappearance makes it look like the addition will stick for good at some point soon.
That’s great news if you’re traveling to Asia, as it means you’ll more quickly see options on these growing airlines, which often have much better award availability from the U.S. to Asia than Delta’s own flights.
Here’s an example with both on the same trip
Here’s an example of space on China Southern, with a hub in Guangzhou (CAN)
And here’s an example of space on China Eastern, with a hub in Shanghai (PVG)
This availability is in addition to existing partners visible on Delta.com, including Aeromexico, Air France, Alaska Airlines, Alitalia, Hawaiian Airlines, KLM, Korean Air, Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia. Delta recently improved its award calendar to offer a more accurate 5 week display of options, which makes searching for awards much easier.
Unfortunately other partners like Aeroflot and Czech Airlines remain missing, but China Eastern and China Southern were two of the biggest gaps in SkyMiles’ biggest problem area for awards, getting to Asia.
Delta’s complete partner list includes:
Aeroflot, Aerolineas Argentinas, Aeromexico, AirEuropa, Air France, Air Tahiti Nui, Alaska Airlines, Alitalia, China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, Czech Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, GOL, Great Lakes, Hawaiian Airlines, Kenya Airways, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Korean Air, Middle East Airlines, Saudia Airlines, Tarom Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Australia, and Xiamen Airlines.
