A 35,000 mile Gold Delta SkyMiles American Express deal

by on Mon November 24, 2014 • 2 Comments

We always keep an eye open for the best intro deals available online, and for a limited time, there was a 35,000Delta_ skymiles mile introductory offer for the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express and the Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card.

That deal is now over, but you can see the latest one here:

Here are two reasons you might consider it before 2014 ends.

1. You want to top off your SkyMiles account before January 1

Delta is changing its SkyMiles program on January 1. And while most of the lowest award prices are staying the same, they are making changes with how you can use your miles.

First, you will no longer be able to book a stopover on an award ticket. That allowed you to work in a visit to two cities for the price of one award ticket. So you could for example fly from Los Angeles to New York to Paris and stay in New York on the way out or on the way back as long as you’d like. That’s ending January 1, so if you don’t quite have enough SkyMiles available to book the award you want, this deal might get you there by January 1st.

Second, you will be able to book one-way tickets. That’s an upgrade of the program, letting you book a one-way ticket for half the price of a round-trip, making it easier for you to use miles when they’re available. For example you could use SkyMiles for one direction of a trip, and points from another program for the other direction of your trip on another airline. That makes it less likely you’re held hostage by a lack of award seats on Delta.

American Express tends to award bonus miles immediately or very quickly after meeting the threshold for an intro deal.

There are no guarantees on this, as American Express officially says it can take several weeks for miles to post, but in practice it could be sooner.

2. You want the checked bag savings on an upcoming flight

If you and your family have a Delta flight booked for the holidays and want to save on bag fees you can apply for the card now and get a first free checked bag for you and up to 8 other people in your reservation. So a family of four checking bags could save $200 roundtrip.

All you have to do is have your card active and your SkyMiles number in your reservation when you check-in for the benefit to apply. It even applies to trips you purchased before activating the card. So while it’s too late to help your flight for Thanksgiving, since it takes several days for a card to arrive unless you request expedited shipping, there’s definitely time to get the bag waiver for your Christmas holiday flights.

Are there better deals?

Delta and American Express from time to time target better deals to specific members, and you can check if you’re targeted online.

These two sites will tell you if you’re eligible for an even higher offer, though we haven’t heard of any right now:

@Nancy – As far as the Caribbean or Mexico, which are as low as 30,000 miles or so on some flights and days.
