See all 50+ routes to Hawaii with points, and the cheapest ways to book

Hawaii is one of the most popular destinations for award travel, and if you’re using one of the big airlines’ mileage programs to try to get there, you may be frustrated that prices are so high.

Don’t give up on finding awards for your family until you’ve tried the options here.

If you leverage transferable points to book via alternative programs, you can save big and stretch your points as much as twice as far. For example, we recently talked about how you can use Korean Skypass, a Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partner, to book Delta flights to Hawaii for just 25,000 miles roundtrip. That’s 37% fewer points than if you used Delta miles. (One catch: You can only book flights for proven family members using Korean Skypass miles, so girlfriends/boyfriends will need to use their own miles).

We’ve compiled a comprehensive list of the 50+ routes to Hawaii from the Mainland U.S. by destination, with the airlines that fly them, and the cheapest point programs for each route. We looked at the big U.S. programs and those transferable instantly from Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards.

Master Key of Point Options To Hawaii

Here is a full list of point options from U.S. frequent flier programs, and international programs transferable from Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards.

We’ve also thrown in the best places to search for award seats so you can easily scan for the award flights that fit your schedule. It’s often better to search for flights on a different site than the airline you’re flying or point program you’re using. When you do that, just zero in on the flights with the airline you want to fly.

All prices in this table are for ‘Saver’ level seats, the lowest advertised mile price for each program. British Airways Avios uses a distance based award chart and prices vary based on how many flight segments you utilize on your trip.

What you’ll learn when you search for awards is that you’re often going to have the best luck splitting up your trip across programs. That will increase the chances you’ll find award space you can use on the dates you need to fly.

For example, you might fly out one way on Alaska Airlines using British Airways Avios, then fly back on United using Singapore KrisFlyer. Thanks to transferable points and one-way awards you can do that easily.

Where to earn the points?

Chase Ultimate Rewards points, which can be earned via the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, give you the most options to Hawaii for less:

  • You have access to some of the cheapest deals (25,000 miles on Delta via Korean Skypass, or American/Alaska via Avios)
  • You get flexibility to fly every airline that goes to Hawaii
  • You can even top off the flight miles you’ve earned with United MileagePlus

But if you’re serious about getting to Hawaii using points, you should also be collecting American Express Membership Rewards points. Membership Rewards lacks the cheap Delta / Korean SkyPass deal, but adds the ability to book one-way awards on Delta via Air France Flying Blue for 15,000 points (30,000 round trip).

Virgin America’s Elevate can be a great deal for Hawaiian Airlines flights, but the issue is it’s hard to earn Elevate points, though its credit cards let you earn enough for a coach roundtrip quickly thanks to signup bonuses – some targeted offers are 20,000 points or more. The current public offer is 15,000 points for the premium card.

You can also transfer Membership Rewards points to Elevate, but unfortunately they are cut in half when you transfer. So that 20,000 point award to Hawaii will cost you 40,000 Membership Rewards points, which is not a great deal.

Better to focus on the Delta / Korean Skypass and Avios / Alaska / American sweet spots.

I think I must be out of my depth here because these prices seem too good to be true. I have only one card with a mileage rewards program. It’s a CapitalOne Venture Visa Signature card. Is this a completely different kind of rewards than those you mentioned? I bought tickets to Hawaii last year, and the miles basically were worth a penny each, so an $800 ticket cost 80,000 miles. Am I doing this wrong?

@Only1 – You’re not doing it wrong per se. The benefit of your method is you can pick any flight or airline and not deal with which flights have ‘award’ seats available. A lot of people though like to sign up for the bonuses of several cards over time, so they have points stashed in a few programs to pull out when the time comes. It’s a bit more work, and you need to be more flexible with dates / times, since award seats can be hard to find on some flights, but you do net more award travel opportunities out of it.
